Outdoor Furniture Care and Maintenance

One of the best ways to keep Sunbrella fabrics looking good and to delay deep or vigorous cleanings is to properly maintain the fabrics. This can be accomplished by simply brushing off dirt before it becomes embedded in the fabrics, wiping up spills as soon as they occur or spot cleaning soon after stains occur.

General or Light Cleaning

  • Brush off any loose dirt.
  • Prepare a cleaning solution of 1/4 cup mild soap, such as Woolite or Dawn dishwashing liquid, per gallon of lukewarm water.
  • Use a sponge or a soft bristle brush to clean.
  • Allow cleaning solution to soak into fabric.
  • Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
  • Allow fabric to air dry.

Spot Cleaning

  • Apply a light mist of mild soap and water using a spray bottle.
  • Work the solution into the stain by lightly scrubbing the area with a sponge or very soft bristle brush.
  • Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
  • Blot excess moisture with a clean, soft towel or sponge.
  • Wet-vacuum or blot excess water.
  • Air dry. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all soap residue is removed.

For Removable Sunbrella Fabric

Hand Washing

Soak fabric in a solution of 1/4 cup mild soap per gallon of lukewarm water.
Use a sponge or a soft bristle brush as necessary.
Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
Air dry.

Machine Washing

Machine wash in cold water. Depending on wash load size, use normal amounts of mild laundry detergent and add 1 cup of bleach. Allow fabric to air dry.

Heavy Cleaning for Stubborn Stains and Mildew

Sunbrella fabric does not promote mildew growth, however, mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances that are not removed from the fabric.

To clean stubborn stains:

  • Prepare a solution of 1 cup of bleach and 1/4 cup mild soap per gallon of water.
  • Spray on entire area and allow to soak into the fabric for 15 minutes.
  • Remove stain with a sponge, clean towel or very soft bristle brush.
  • Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
  • Allow fabric to air dry.
  • If stain and/or mildew are severe, bleach quantities may be increased. View the stain chart for removal of specific stains.

Re-Treating the Fabric for Ease of Cleaning

As part of the finishing process, Sunbrella fabrics are treated with a fluorocarbon finish, which enhances water repellency. This finish is designed to last for several years, but must be replenished after a thorough cleaning. Based on test results, Glen Raven recommends 303 Fabric Guard™ as the preferred re-treatment product for Sunbrella fabrics. Fabrics should be re-treated after thorough cleaning or after five years of use.

Applying 303 Fabric Guard™

303 should be applied to Sunbrella fabrics after each thorough cleaning, which typically removes the original finish and reduces the fabric’s water repellency.

  • Clean Sunbrella fabric, using one of the cleaning methods.
  • Allow Sunbrella to completely air dry.
  • Apply 303 Fabric Guard in a well-ventilated area following instructions on the container.
  • Apply 303 in a thin, even coat and allow fabric to dry completely.
  • Apply a second thin, even coating of 303. (Two light coatings are more effective in restoring fabric water resistance than a single heavy coating.)
  • Note: A 15-ounce bottle provides coverage of up to 50 square feet of fabric.

Professional Cleaners

In evaluating the services of a professional firm, you should inquire about the firm’s experience in working with Sunbrella fabrics and knowledge of cleaning and re-treatment requirements.

DO NOT dry clean Sunbrella fabrics.

Helpful Hints

  • Protect the area around your Sunbrella fabric when using a bleach solution – bleach may discolor non-Sunbrella fabrics. Always rinse Sunbrella thoroughly to completely remove bleach.
  • Please be aware of the environment when cleaning with bleach. Bleach can have harmful effects on the natural environment around you. We do not advise using bleach if you are surrounded by a body of water or other environment that could be affected.
  • Sunbrella fabric air-dries very quickly.
  • Machine drying is not necessary.
  • If fabric has some wrinkling, use an iron, if necessary, but only on the synthetic setting. As some irons exceed the recommended temperature on the synthetic setting, test a small inconspicuous area before ironing entire piece.
  • DO NOT use a steamer or iron set to steam setting.

The choice is yours and we want you to be knowledgeable when you are searching for outdoor furniture to fit your deck, lanai, porch, or veranda. In the outdoor casual furniture industry there are several materials that make great options for patio furniture.

Aluminum and Wrought Iron are the two metal materials most commonly used in outdoor patio furniture.

Aluminum outdoor patio furniture is often lighter weight, whereas wrought iron furniture has considerable weight. Keep the weight factor in mind if you foresee frequently re-arranging pieces.

Aluminum outdoor patio furniture requires minimal maintenance, needing only an occasional rinsing with water to remove dirt or debris. Wrought iron needs light maintenance, and periodic wiping with diluted dish soap. To help protect wrought iron from rain, apply a spray wax once or twice a year. Over time, wrought iron furniture also may chip or scratch. It is best to cover or relocate wrought iron furniture during inclement weather, or extremely cold or hot temperatures. This will help to reduce potential damage and possible maintenance.

Aluminum and wrought iron are durable materials for different reasons. Aluminum is resistant to corrosion and rust, holds up well to outdoor elements and lasts a lifetime. Aluminum furniture is finished with a powder coat finish, which lends to its long-lasting quality. Powder Coat Finishes are offered in a variety of colors to enhance your outdoor space. Although wrought iron is susceptible to rust and corrosion, its heavy weight makes durable.

At Elegant Outdoor Living in Sarasota, Naples, Bonita Springs, and Fort Myers we highly recommend powder-coated aluminum outdoor furniture in our area and for any home located on the coasts. We have a very high content of salt in our air and high levels of humidity that will eat away at non-powder coated furniture and accessories.

Outdoor aluminum furniture is the better choice for unique design and style. Aluminum pieces are made from liquid material poured into sand casts, which are molded into new designs. The freedom to create new molds allows for intricate detailing, which often is not found in wrought iron. Wrought Iron typically has a very traditional look.

Recycled Plastic for Outdoor Furniture

YES, REALLY! This material is becoming the hottest trend in outdoor patio furniture by customers and developers when looking to design outdoor spaces in commercial areas and in residential homes.

MGP stands for Marine Grade Polymer. At Elegant Outdoor Living we have been offering the recycled high quality plastic material from manufacturers like Seaside Casual and Telescope Casual. We introduced Telescope’s Bazza collection in our showrooms last season and we could not keep it in stock. The durability, the design, and the story of MGP attracts every customer.

Seaside’s MGP Adirondack chairs are a staple in our store. They come in the most vibrant colors and they are in available in the very traditional lounge chair to more of a contemporary version of a bar stool.

The recycled material is a highly durable plastic perfect for outdoor spaces close to or on the water. Homes on the ocean, Docks, pool lanais, lakes, etc.

MGP is a plastic form of lumber made of virgin or recycled plastic. It is made of 100% plastic

Resistant to cracking and splitting

Manufacturers claim this material is more environmentally-friendly and requires less maintenance than wood/plastic composites or rot-resistant wood. Unlike wood-plastic composite lumber, plastic lumber is 100% recyclable after its original intended use.

At Elegant Outdoor Living we offer several options for replacing your existing cushions whether they are worn or if you just want new look to compliment your outdoor space.

We are a certified Sunbrella fabric dealer which provides us access to hundreds of outdoor high performance fabrics.

Each outdoor furniture manufacturer we carry in our showroom has a replacement cushion program which we will order for you as well. If you are looking to revive your 10 year old Brown Jordan outdoor furniture but the frames are still in perfect condition, we will order directly from Brown Jordan.

Today Sunbrella is the leading premium fabric for casual and outdoor furniture. Durability, fade resistance, name recognition, ease of cleaning, comfort and beauty have made Sunbrella the asked-for brand when it comes to patio, deck and outdoor room furniture and fabric accessories. The Sunbrella design team works with the nation’s leading home décor companies in creating Sunbrella fabrics that are exclusive to their specific brands and designed for specific target audiences.

Here at Elegant Outdoor Living, we recommend you call us at one of our three locations or stop in with one set of your existing cushions in order for us to give you an accurate quote and help you with your measurements.

There are a few tips that we would like to share with you when measuring and looking into replacing your current outdoor cushions.

  1. If your existing cushions are too worn do NOT measure these cushions as a template for the new cushions. You will need to measure your outdoor furniture frames.
  2. Outdoor Furniture cushions will vary from 2″ thick to 6″ thick. Generally, deep seating cushions as in outdoor sofas and sectionals will have thicker cushions and dining and barstools will be much thinner.
  3. Do not replace outdoor cushions with indoor cushions. Indoor cushions will mold and wear very quickly outdoors, especially in extreme climates.

GLOSTER. life lived

Gloster’s journey began in Africa where they first started making furniture for local market consumption. Later on, when they realized they were actually quite good at it, and began exporting to Europe.

Over 10 million pieces of furniture and 50 years of growth later they are now a worldwide name. You’ll find Gloster from Austria to Australia, Japan to Jordan and right here in southwest Florida at our Elegant Outdoor Living outdoor patio furniture stores in Naples, Bonita Springs, and Fort Myers.

From the very start Gloster was always both environmentally and ethically aware -they used the discarded branches and tree stumps, which would otherwise have been burnt, to make the smaller components.

In 1981, they started the Gloster brand. From quite humble roots, they were soon exporting the furniture all around the world. After transferring the African factory’s expertise to Asia so that they could have access to the plantation grown teak that was only available in Indonesia, Gloster grew to be the principle high end worldwide brand for teak outdoor furniture over the 80s and 90s.

Their reputation is based on exceptional design and unparalleled quality which is why we go so far to protect it – testing everything they make to international standards. And when those standards don’t exist, Gloster creates them.

Although their expertise started with teak, it hasn’t stopped there. Now, more than fifty years since they started, they are established as a global leader in teak, woven, aluminium, stainless steel and outdoor lounge furniture.

For our 2015 season, we are introducing three new outdoor furniture collections into our Elegant Outdoor Living stores for 2015. Pepper Marsh which is a beautiful combination of resin wicker and teak, Oyster Reef which is an exquisitely crafted teak collection with a satin feel and look, and this year we are bringing in BLOC. Bloc is a very contemporary modular collection with an open aluminum base and outdura/crypton waterproof fabric. This collection is the perfect outdoor collection to relax poolside and not worry about the tropical weather soaking through the fabric.

Crypton has set the industry standard for performance fabric, providing a patented integrated moisture barrier that will not break down EVER. NO SPILLS. NO STAINS. NO SURPRISES. NOTHING CAN PENETRATE CRYPTON.

Jensen Leisure’s Commitment to the Environment

Leisure Furniture

We are all vital for a better tomorrow. This is why Jensen Leisure Furniture works with the @Rainforest Alliance. Choose better. Pay a little more attention to the signs.

At Elegant Outdoor Living in Sarasota, Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, and Naples, we are excited to introduce Jensen Leisure Furniture. Jensen has the reputation in the outdoor casual furniture industry of having an impressive range of traditional and modern designs along with their impressive craftsmanship and quality standards.

Jensen Leisure was awarded Wood Manufacturer of the Year by the International Casual Furnishings Association for the 2014-2015 year.

We are proud to partner with Jensen Leisure as they are committed to their products, their lasting quality, and especially their commitment to the environment. They have been working on maintaining a long-term well-being of the forests and the people who depend on them. They use certified wood and Ipé wood that meets the criteria by Forest Stewardship Council®. FSC is a non-profit organization that sets international stands for responsible forestry. With Jensen’s commitment they are helping to conserve tropical rain forests and enhance the standard of living in its surrounding communities.

Ipé is an incredibly strong and dense timber, with very high wear durability. A handsome chocolate brown when new, the sun gracefully transforms Ipé to a mature, elegant silver patina similar to outdoor teak.

In addition to FSC® certified Ipé, Jensen Leisure Furniture has introduced a line of low-maintenance outdoor furniture crafted from 100% FSC® certified Roble.

Roble is a native hardwood from Eastern Bolivia, and has been known for decades in Europe as a premium garden furniture wood. It is highly valued for its outdoor stability and durability.

Outdoor Wood Furniture

Jensen Leisure Furniture Ipé and Roble trees are at least 100 years old before they are harvested. The large size of Roble trees allows for wide board and clear cuttings of 100% heartwood, the most durable part of the tree. Only the heartwood portion of the tree is structurally stable and naturally resists swelling and contraction caused during seasonal changes in outdoor environments.

We are bringing in the Jensen Leisure outdoor furniture line because of their commitment to the environment and their products. At Elegant Outdoor Living we offer our customer’s the finest brands and quality in outdoor furniture. Please shop with us at our Sarasota, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, and Naples stores to see the Tivoli Collection by Jensen Leisure Furniture.

Why Pay More for Outdoor Furniture?

Why does outdoor patio furniture cost more than indoor furniture?

Our design consultants in Saraota, Naples, Bonita Springs, and Fort Myers are asked this question by consumers on a weekly basis. Bringing to attention the need to explain and educate all consumers on the difference of high quality and the higher cost for outdoor furniture.

Would you put your indoor sofa and indoor chairs outdoors? How long would they last in the elements?

Outdoor Furniture is created to withstand the outdoor elements whether it is the sun, rain, humidity or extreme temperatures found throughout the country and the world. Long-lasting quality patio furniture is manufactured of aluminum, resin wicker, MGP-marine grade polymer, or durable wood materials such as teak, roble, ipe, and outdoor high performance fabrics such as Sunbrella.

The outdoor furniture industry has come a long way in regards to finishes, craftsmanship, and style. For example, Tommy Bahama Outdoor has designed their outdoor collections to be an extension of their interior collections. Quality outdoor furniture is so beautiful that you would not hesitate to use it indoors. Castelle-Pride is known for their hand applied finishes and exquisite attention to detail in their furniture. Sunbrella high performance fabrics are now commonly used by interior designers to outfit the entire home. The fabric is soft, stylish, and yet extremely durable and functional.

The outdoor furniture brand names we carry at Elegant Outdoor Living offer warranties from 1 to 15 years. For Example, Winston offers a 15 year warranty on their aluminum frames. Customers have told us stories about owning their Winston Furniture for 30 years.

Yes, you might have to replace cushions or the slings but the frames will last. Every brand we offer in our stores provides the opportunity to buy replacement cushions, slings, and parts.

In an article from Furniture Today they published the Casual Living and HGTV Consumer Views Survey where consumers listed the top ten reasons why they would pay more for outdoor furniture.

  1. Fabrics that are water, stain, fade resistant. Such as Sunbrella high performance fabrics.
  2. Comfort
  3. Products that will last 5 years or more
  4. Style and design
  5. Made in the USA
  6. Warranty
  7. Eco-Friendly
  8. Something unique, friends will not have
  9. Well-known brand
  10. Designer label

If you have further questions and would like to learn more about the materials and warranties offered by our brands please stop in our stores, call one of our knowledgeable design consultants or send us a message on our contact page.
